Newtonian Reflectors on Non-Computerized Mounts

The Newtonian Reflectors on Non-Computerized Mounts category includes reflector telescopes that come with either an alt-azimuth mount or an equatorial mount. The telescope mount may be completely manual, which means that the user pushes the telescope into position to center and view celestial objects through the eyepiece, or the mount may have some degree of motorization. The most common motor drive for non-computerized mounts is an RA (right ascension) motor. If the telescope and mount package you choose comes with a right ascension motor, it will allow the telescope to automatically track an object as it moves through the sky from east to west. A declination motor, which is also included if you buy a telescope with a “dual-axis drive” also compensates for an object’s north/south movements.

A reflector on an alt-az mount is one of the simplest telescopes you can buy. It would be a good choice for an older child or a beginner who wants to delve into deep-sky objects as well as the planets and Moon. If you are looking for a big, easy to use reflector on a simple mount, check out all of our huge selection of Dobsonian telescopes!

The most cutting-edge Newtonian on an alt-az mount is the Celestron StarSense Explorer! This really is a non-computerized mount, and in fact there are no motors at all, however, the Celestron StarSense Explorer uses new technology plus your smartphone to locate objects and help you find them by providing a big bullseye target! All you have to do then is move the telescope by following obvious guides until you land on the planet, galaxy, nebula, star or other celestial target. Your smartphone works in conjunction with a free app. The Celestron StarSense Explorer Telescopes are a really nice compromise between a manual scope and one that is fully computerized!

If you would like to do astrophotography some day or would like some motorization options, High Point recommends an equatorial mount. This category offers Newtonian reflectors on equatorial mounts, with and without a motor or motors. Keep in mind that some manual equatorial mounts can have electronics added later on. Contact a High Point product advisor for help choosing an upgradeable equatorial mount if this interests you.
