For many people, the sun is just as fascinating as other celestial objects in the sky, and why wouldn’t it be? It’s a star that amatuer astronomers can see up close. The observing hours are also a bit more convenient. Though the sun is interesting and changes frequently, a set of rules must be followed in order to view the sun safely without permanently damaging your eyes.

The first rule is to never point your telescope at the sun without a proper solar filter. The second is to always make sure that no damage has been inflicted on the solar filter. This includes scratches or pin holes. If there are any defects in the solar filter, do not use the filter. If a defected solar filter is used when solar viewing, permanent damage can be done to the eye.

High Point offers two different solar filters, full aperture and off-axis solar filters, to protect your eyes while you enjoy solar viewing. There are offered in sizes that fit all popular telescopes. Astrozap uses Baader film and glass materials. These two different materials offer two different hues to the solar filter. Some say that the Baader film creates a bluish-white image and the glass provides an orangish colored image. Which type of solar filter to buy depends on personal preference, and you can always buy both and compare to be sure which one you prefer. Also, when choosing a solar filter, make sure to measure the size of the objective to make sure that the solar filter will cover the telescope objective completely.

The Astrozap solar filter, proudly made in the USA, is equipped with one or more plastic retaining screws that do not mar of scratch the telescope’s finish.

Upon receiving your Astrozap solar filter for you telescope, make sure to check the filter for any damage before using. Also make sure that it fits over the objective(s) completely and can be held firmly in place by the adjustment screws. Confirming these items will further protect your eyes and equipment before your solar viewing session.
