Solar Filters

Though the Sun is interesting and changes frequently, a set of rules must always be followed in order to observe it safely.

The first rule is to never point your telescope at the Sun without a proper solar filter. The second is to always make sure there’s no damage to the filter, including scratches or pinholes. If there are any defects in the filter, do not use it as this could cause permanent damage to your eyes.

There are two common types of solar filters, glass and film, and High Point offers a range of Baader film solar filters from Astrozap to protect your eyes. A glass filter tends to produce an orangish-colored image of the Sun, whereas Baader film creates a more natural-color image. This means you can use various color (or interference) filters with Baader film and focus on certain spectral passbands.

Astrozap solar filters, proudly made in the USA, are equipped with one or more plastic retaining screws that do not mar or scratch the telescope's finish. Upon receiving your solar filter, be sure to inspect it for any damage before use. Also, make sure that it fits over the objective(s) completely and can be held firmly in place by the adjustment screws. Confirming these items will further protect your eyes and equipment before your solar viewing session.

Filters are available to fit a wide range of aperture sizes, from 80mm (3.2”) to 405mm (16.0”), so you can be sure you’ll be able to find the perfect filter for your scope. For example, the AstroZap Baader Solar Filter for ETX 90 and 90 mm - 100 mm Telescopes fits the popular Meade ETX 90 telescope and allows you to enjoy the Sun in a neutral white light.

Don’t own a Meade? No problem! Astrozap also produces filters to fit almost any telescope on the market. The AstroZap Baader Solar Filter for 130 mm Telescopes and 155 mm - 165 mm OD Telescopes fits telescopes with an outside diameter of between 155mm (6.1”) and 165mm (6.5”) - regardless of the manufacturer!
