About JMI Wheeley Bars

Do you wish you had an easy way to move your tripod-mounted, pier-mounted or Dobsonian telescope from garage to patio or driveway? The JMI Wheeley Bars were created for just that purpose. The sturdy base with locking wheels and leveling bolts allows you to easily move your telescope to and from your viewing location, then you can lock the wheels in place until you're ready to roll your scope back into the garage, house, storage area, or to your car for easier breakdown.

Wheeley Bars with standard 2-3/8" hard rubber wheels are designed to be used on hard, flat surfaces only. With the optional large-wheel upgrade, great care in maneuvering and ideal conditions, they can be used on grass, dirt and gravel surfaces. Wheeley Bars are generally designed to be used with the tripod legs almost fully retracted to reduce the overall width.

JMI Wheeley Bars for Astro-Physics Pier Mount

JMI makes Wheeley Bars for Astro-Physics 6", 8", 10" and also for the Pier mounts 400, 600, 800, 1200. The customized universal model for the pier mounts differs from the large size universal mount because of its 1" tip receptacle at the end of the legs.

This Wheeley Bar includes standard 2-3/8" wheels, which raise the mount approximately 5 inches from the ground. Large 5" or 10" wheels are available for an additional cost by choosing from the Options above. By upgrading the wheels when you purchase your Wheeley bars instead of purchasing them separately, you will save an extra $20.

What Size Wheels Should I Choose?

  • Standard 2-3/8" Hard Rubber Wheels: The small 2-3/8" hard-rubber wheels are good for flat hard surfaces with no cracks or grooves, such as gymnasium floors or smooth concrete.

  • 5" Wheel Upgrade: For hard surfaces with cracks or seams such as concrete sidewalks or rough hard surfaces like cobblestone, the 5" polyurethane wheels are best as they will be less likely to get stuck. If you choose these wheels you will receive three (3) fully locking 5" diameter polyurethane wheels instead of the standard 2-3/8" wheels. The 5" wheels will raise the mount 6-3/8" off the ground.

  • 10" Wheel Upgrade: The large 10" all-terrain pneumatic rubber-tire wheels are designed for field use on rough surfaces such as grass, dirt and gravel, or to give you a smoother ride altogether. Keep in mind that even if the dirt you are traveling over is dry, the weight of the telescope, especially if it weighs more than 100 pounds, will cause the wheels to sink into the top layer of dirt and make it hard to move your telescope. The wetter the surface and the heavier the scope, the more pronounced the sinkage will be. JMI does not recommend using Wheeley Bars on these surfaces under adverse conditions, especially if you have a very heavy telescope. If you choose the 10" wheel upgrade, you will receive six (6) large 10" all-terrain pneumatic wheels and a tow handle instead of the standard 2-3/8" wheels. A dual inboard wheel design on the rear wheels maintains a narrow profile. The 10" wheels will raise the mount about 3-1/4" off the ground.
