QSI 660wsg Cooled Monochrome CCD Camera



The 660wsg, as with all QSI 600 series cameras, delivers up to 8 MHz dual read rates with high speed USB 2.0 and full 16-bit output for superior quality images featuring high frame rates, exceptionally wide dynamic range, excellent linearity, and extremely low noise. Regulated cooling down to over 45ºC, or 50ºC with an optional Liquid Heat Exchanger, is achieved via custom two-stage TEC.



Each camera in QSI's 600 Series uses a high speed USB 2.0 port (USB 1.1 compatible) in order to connect with a host computer and imaging application software. For an entire 2048 x 2048 image frame, typical read and transfer time is roughly 1/2 second in High Speed mode and under 7 seconds in High Quality mode. This frame rate can be enhanced further by reading only part of the image (ROI) or with flexible on-chip binning.

QSI 660wsg Monochrome CCD Camera Features



Sony ICX694 CCD Sensor: The QSI 660wsg camera uses the Sony ExView Interline Transfer CCD image sensor, and sports both micro lens technology and anti-blooming protection. The 6.1 megapixel Sony ICX694 uses pixels that are 4.54µm x 4.54µm square, and has a photoactive image array of 2758 x 2208. The ICX694 has exceptional sensitivity across the visual band with peak quantum efficiency of 77% along with remarkably low dark current.



Mechanical Shutter: The QSI 660wsg includes an electronic shutter as well as a mechanical shutter. The mechanical shutter is not used to actually make the exposure when operating with an interline transfer CCD. This is still the electronic shutter's job. The mechanical shutter covers the CCD and streamlines Dark and Bias frame creation for future image processing.



WSG Body & Integrated Filter Wheel: In order to make room for an internal five position color filter wheel while providing an integrated guide port, this QSI 660 uses a WSG camera body. Engineered with extensive use of sophisticated CAD-CAM design tools, the QSI 600 Series camera body is CNC machined from aircraft grade aluminum alloy. The finely finished anodized body components are assembled with corrosion resistant stainless steel hardware throughout. The standard filter wheel accepts standard threaded 1.25" filters*.



Integrated Guide Port (IGP): The Integrated Guider Port in the QSI 660wsg works by redirecting a portion of the light from your main telescope with a pick-off prism into a separate guide camera mounted on top of the WSG cover.



The Integrated Guide Port solves a number of problems associated with other common guiding solutions. The main image on this page depicts a camera with red arrows to represent the portion of light being redirected to the guide camera. As light enters the camera, it hits the pick-off prism located ahead of the built-in five position color filter wheel and is reflected upward at a 90º angle to the guide camera attached on top. By capturing light for guiding from in front of the filters and mechanical shutter, you're able to use all guide star light for the purposes of guiding as no light is removed by pass through a red, green, blue, or narrowband filter first, ensuring the best possible signal to noise ratio (SNR) for your guide stars. Guiding is possible even with the shutter closed.



The large 1/2” square pick-off prism is optimally positioned close to the internal filter wheel just outside the field of view of the main sensor, supporting the use of guide cameras with large sensors, while preventing any vignetting of the main sensor even with very fast optical systems.



High Quality Read Mode: High Quality (HQ) Read Mode provides the lowest possible noise but requires a longer time to read the image from the sensor. High speed (HS) Read Mode reads the image from the sensor at 8 million pixels per second (8 MHz) supporting frame rates of up 15 fps depending on the camera model, ROI and binning.



USB 2.0 and Full 16-Bit Output: Pixel depth is a full 16-bits per pixel providing the smoothest color and gray scale transitions and the lowest noise.



Selectable ROI and Binning: All QSI cameras have selectable Region of Interest (ROI) and binning for the most flexibility in framing your subject.



Output Hardware Trigger: QSI cameras are able to produce a hardware signal from the Control Port to generate an external event such as a strobe.



Regulated Cooling: For successful long exposure imaging, cooling the CCD is crucial. Sensor cooling drastically minimizes an image's dark current and resulting thermal noise to make long exposures a realistic undertaking.



QSI 600 Series cameras use a very efficient thermo-electric cooler (TEC) which relies on the "Peltier Effect" to cool the CCD. When power is applied to a TEC, one side of the device gets cold and other side gets hot, essentially pumping heat from the cold side to the hot side. All QSI 600 Series cameras employ a two-stage TEC to increase the differential cooling effect. The more power applied to the TEC, the greater the differential cooling and the colder the CCD can get. The heat pumped from the CCD, as well as the power dissipated by the TEC, creates a significant amount of excess heat that must be removed from the camera. The back of a QSI 600 Series camera acts as a large heatsink with cooling fins machined directly into the body. Two automatically controlled cooling fans force air through these fins. The movement of air through the cooling fins greatly increases the amount of heat removed from the camera. Keep in mind that the lowest temperature that the CCD can be cooled is limited by the ambient air temperature and the speed of the cooling fans. Achieving very low temperatures is easy when imaging outdoors during cooler weather. If it is particularly cold you may not even need to turn the fans on, but if it is too warm you may need the help of Liquid-Assisted Cooling, which is available optionally.



Power Efficiency: One of the defining features of the 600 Series cameras is power efficiency. A fully configured WS camera operates from a single 12v DC supply and consumes less than 24 watts at full cooling, with both fans at maximum and the filter wheel moving. Other camera model configurations have power consumption as low as 5 watts. Included with each camera is an approved 12 volt DC power supply with an input voltage range of 90-240V, 50-60HZ.



Notification: Both visual and audible notification is built into all 600 Series cameras. A multi-color LED status display provides visual indication of the various states of camera operation. The behavior of the indicator is configurable and can be disabled by user command. A unique internal beeper provides audible feedback of camera operation and status. Like the visual display, the beeper can be configured and disabled by the user.
