SkyWire Lightning Serial Accessory Cable

Enables wired serial communication with a telescope from an iPad (4th generation or later), iPhone 5/5S/5C, or iPod Touch (5th generation or later) with Lightning connector that has SkySafari version 3.8 or higher downloaded.

SkyWire represents the most efficent way to convert your iPhone into a modern 21st century telescope controller. This new accessory provides your iOS device with an RS-232 port, allowing it to connect straight to your telescope's serial port.

Contrary to other available iPhone serial cables, you won't have to jailbreak your iPhone in order to use the SkyWire. It's the easiest, most dependable, and most affordable method for telescope control from an iOS device.

No configuration is necessary. Simply plug it into your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. It also doesn't require batteries as it's powered by the phone and consumes close to no power when not in use.

Please note: SkyWire is not compatible with Android devices as it was designed to work exclusively with iOS devices.

Telescope Compatibility

SkyWire will work with any telescope that has a standard RS-232 serial interface. Telescope models previously tested and known to be compatible with SkyWire include:

  • Meade LX-200 Classic and GPS
  • Meade LX-90, ETX, LXD, LX-400 ACF with AutoStar #497 controllers
  • Meade Magellan I and II
  • Celestron NexStar 5i/8i, GPS, SLT, SE
  • Celestron CG5, CGE, CGEM, CPC, AVX
  • Orion Sirius, Atlas, SkyView Pro, SkyQuest XTg
  • SkyWatcher mounts with SynScan controllers
  • Takahashi Temma 2
  • ServoCAT, Argo Navis, Sky Commander, Losmandy DSC
  • Astro-Physics GTO, Losmandy Gemini, Vixen SkySensor 2000
  • Tangent Instruments BBox, JMI NGC-MAX, Celestron AstroMaster
  • Lumicon SkyVector, Takahashi Super Navigator, Dave Ek Box
  • Orion Intelliscope, Orion SkyWizard

Both the Meade ETX 60 and ETX 80 come with the Autostar #494 controller. Since this controller does not have a serial port, it is incompatible with SkyWire and you'll need to replace it with the #497 Autostar controller which does have a serial port.

The only telescopes that are not compatible with SkyWire are those missing an RS-232 serial interface. Such models include:

  • iOptron SmartStar and MiniTower mounts with 8401/8402 controllers
  • Meade ETX-LS
  • Vixen mounts with StarBook controllers

The above telescopes have either USB or Ethernet interfaces, making it impossible to physically connect SkyWire to them.

SkyWire Lightning Serial Accessory Cable Specifications

  • Weight: 40 g (1.5 oz.)
  • Length: 1 m (39")
  • Connectors: Lightning or 30-pin iPhone/iPod/iPad connector, DB9 male RS-232 connector
  • Color: Black
  • Power Usage: <50 mA under continuous use; <5 mA when not in use.
  • Baud Rate: Maximum 57.6 kbps
  • Data Bits: 7 or 8
  • Stop Bits: 1 or 2
  • Parity: None, Even, or Odd
  • Flow Control: XON/XOFF, RTS/CTS
  • Modem Control Signals: CTS, RI, DTR, DCD, RTS, DTR

  • iPhone Compatibility: any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iOS 4 or later
  • Telescope Compatibility: Any telescope model with an RS-232 serial port
  • Not Compatible with: Celestron USB Hand Controllers

With both SkyWire and the iPhone running continuously, SkyWire depletes the battery at most 20% faster than if the iPhone were running alone. When plugged in but not active, SkyWire consumes nearly 10x less power and should have almost no influence on battery life. And an iPad battery won't even perceive a SkyWire connected to it due to its much greater capacity.
