  • A computerized telescope is a fast, fun way to tour the cosmos, and the Meade 8” LX90 delivers that experience in spades. Use the easy-to-use AutoStar controller to unlock your adventures.

  • Astronomers know how important sharp, high-contrast views are to the success of any observing session. With Meade’s Advanced Coma-Free (ACF) optical system, you’ll get professional results.

  • This special package includes an Apertura 13-piece Eyepiece & Filter Kit. Inside the aluminum case, you'll find five eyepieces, a 2X Barlow that can be used to double the magnification of each eyepiece, and a set of color filters. Just imagine having ten different magnifications, or powers, for your telescope...enough to give you the perfect view of any object! Additionally, any standard eyepieces you receive in this telescope package can also be used with the 2X Barlow, giving you two extra magnifications for each eyepiece!

  • You’ll also receive an Celestron Portable Power Supply; a portable battery that you can take anywhere and use to power this telescope as well as other accessories. Included in the bundle is a Meade DC Power Cord to enable use of the Apertura power supply. You can read more about all the components of the 8” LX90-ACF Telescope Bundle below:

An Overview of the Meade LX90 Telescope

The Meade 8" LX90 has an 8” diameter f/10 ACF optical system (focal length 2000mm), Ultra-High Transmission Coatings (UHTC), and Borosilicate Glass Corrector Plate for maximum image brightness and contrast. Electronics include the advanced Meade AudioStar™ computer system with over 30,000 object library, multiple guided tours, High Precision Pointing capability, and Meade SmartDrive with Permanent Periodic Error Correction.

Precise and quick star alignment is accomplished with an incorporated 16 channel genuine Sony GPS receiver. The AudioStar™ is flash-updatable via free downloads at Meade.com (optional cable required). The Meade 8” LX90 features a solid and stable aluminum double fork mount, with fast slew speeds that are adjustable from 1 to 7 degrees per second. Fine slewing and photographic guiding speeds can be adjusted from .01x to 1x sidereal in 1/100th increments. The mount and all electronics are internally powered by 8 (user supplied) C-cell batteries, which will typically operate the telescope for a generous 60 hours. The mount also has mechanical locks in both axes allowing adjustment even without power.

The LX90 comes fully equipped with a heavy duty height adjustable Meade Field Tripod, 1.25" diagonal prism, Series 4000 26mm 5-Element Plössl eyepiece, Meade AutoStar® Suite Astronomer Edition Software for PC, and an 8x50 optical viewfinder with quick release bracket. Advanced Coma-Free Optical System

Unlike Schmidt-Cassegrain systems, Meade’s Advanced Coma-Free (ACF) optical system provides razor-sharp pin-point star images all the way to the very edge of the field of view. This aplanatic (coma-free) optical system brings the highest level of performance to the amateur astronomer. In the ACF design of the Meade LX90, light enters from the right, passes through a thin lens with 2-sided aspheric correction (“correcting plate”), proceeds to a spherical primary mirror, and then to a hyperbolic secondary mirror. The hyperbolic secondary mirror multiplies the effective focal length of the primary mirror and results in a focus at the focal plane, with light passing through a central perforation in the primary mirror.

The 8” Meade LX90-ACF includes an oversized primary mirror, yielding a fully illuminated field-of-view significantly wider than is possible with a standard-size primary mirror. Meade ACF telescopes have off-axis field illumination of about 10% greater, aperture-for-aperture, than other systems utilizing standard-size primary mirrors. Field stops machined into the inside-diameter surface of the primary mirror baffle tube significantly increase lunar, planetary, and deep-space image contrast. These field stops effectively block off-axis stray light rays.

Tour the Cosmos with Meade AutoStar

Control of the Meade LX90 is through the operation of the AutoStar. Nearly all functions of the telescope are accomplished with just a few pushes of AutoStar’s buttons. Some of the major features of AutoStar are:

  • Automatically move the telescope to any of over 30,000 objects stored in the database or manually enter the astronomical coordinates of any celestial object.

  • Take a guided tour of the best celestial objects to view on any given night of the year.

  • Download the latest satellite data and software revisions directly from the Meade website and share software with other AutoStar enthusiasts.

  • Control your Meade LX90 Telescope Bundle with your PC using an RS-232 interface.

  • Access a glossary of astronomical terms.

  • Calculate which eyepiece to use for optimum viewing of a celestial object.

  • Mount the telescope in the “Alt/Az” mode (Altitude - Azimuth, or vertical - horizontal) for fully automatic tracking of celestial objects.

  • Extensive long-exposure astrophotography and CCD imaging capability is available when the LX90 is mounted in the “Equatorial” (Polar) mode using an optional mounting wedge.

Align Your Meade LX90 Telescope with GPS Assistance

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is comprised of 24 satellites orbiting the Earth that are constantly transmitting their precise position and time. The system provides highly accurate, worldwide positioning and navigation information for any number of applications. GPS receivers on the Earth acquire signals from three to twelve satellites to determine the precise latitude, longitude, and time of the receiver. (Accuracy of the receiver’s position may be within 10 to 15 feet.) As AutoStar uses latitude, longitude, and time information to calculate the positions of celestial objects, GPS is an ideal tool for aligning your telescope.

About the Apertura 13-Piece 1.25" Filter and Eyepiece Kit

This eyepiece and filter kit is an amazing deal and will allow you to match your telescope’s magnification to different types of celestial objects, such as the Moon, the planets, brighter compact deep-sky objects such as star clusters and larger, more diffuse objects like galaxies and nebulae. Use any of your eyepieces alone, or pair them with the included 2X Barlow to double the magnification! Not counting any eyepieces you receive as standard equipment with your telescope, that means you will have ten (10) magnifications to choose from!

You will also receive six filters to use while viewing the planets. It takes some experimentation, but different colored filters will make details on a planet’s surface or cloud structure more prominent. These glass filters have threaded aluminum cells that screw onto the bottom of any of the eyepieces in this kit, as well as other 1.25” eyepieces you purchase later. Before long, you will know exactly which filter to use to more easily see, for instance, the polar ice caps on Mars or storms in the cloud structure of Jupiter.

All of the eyepieces and filters in this kit come stored in an aluminum case. Inside you will find protective foam that cushions your astronomy accessories. The case may be silver or black, it all depends on our availability at the time, but either way, you will find that there is some extra room for more telescope eyepieces, filters, or other small accessories.
