Viewing the Sun is safe and easy with High Point’s vast selection of telescope solar filters. Whether it’s a white light filter or a high-tech H-Alpha filter, these filters will not only protect your eyes but enhance your viewing experience as well. They reduce glare and light scattering, increase contrast through selective filtration, increase definition and resolution, reduce irradiation and lessen eye fatigue.


White light filters are a special type of neutral density filter ideal for newer Sun observers. These filters show the entire visible wavelength spectrum but transmit only 0.001% of the Sun’s light. Many of these filters will show a white-looking Sun, however, there are white light filters that are slightly tinted to show a more orange color, as we normally see the Sun.


Hydrogen-Alpha filters, on the hand, transmit just the H-Alpha wavelength and are considered a narrow-band filter. These show detailed features of the Sun, such as solar flares and sunspots, in a reddish hue. This makes H-Alpha filters a worthy investment for many seasoned Sun observers. Most observers recommend using an H-Alpha filter with a short refractor, either a 3” or 4” will do. As always, make sure your filter is designed for viewing or photographing the Sun!


There are certain precautions you must take in order to safely view the Sun. Before viewing, always inspect your solar filters and do not use if there is any sign of scratches or damage. Older solar viewing filters recommend discarding the product after 3 years, as the filter gradually loses its effectiveness. However, this is not the case for many modern Sun-viewing filters. Always consult an expert to confirm if you can safely use your older solar filters.
