Orion was founded in 1975 by Tim Gieseler of Santa Cruz, California. By the late 1980's, Orion became the largest mail order reseller of astronomical equipment in the world. Amateur astronomers were excited to see the latest Orion catalog in their mailbox during those years. After all, that was before the internet came along, and, just like the Sears catalog back in the day, the Orion telescope accessories catalog was one of the few ways to buy astronomical gear in most parts of the country.

Orion eyepieces, in particular, garnered a lot of interest. Early on they exude quality even for an affordable price.Today, Orion offers a full range of eyepieces for every kind of observer. The Q70 series of eyepieces are an economical choice yet still perform impressively. Featuring a 70° apparent field of view and parafocal design, each Q70 eyepiece consists of five lens elements of high-index glass to deliver sharp, high-contrast images with excellent aberration correction.

The Expanse series is a similar option but with a slightly smaller apparent field of view, 66 degrees. However, the Expanse eyepieces have been optimized for deep-sky observations. Expanse oculars have big eye lenses and great eye relief (13 mm to 17 mm). Eyeglass wearers can view the entire field without removing their glasses. All eyepiece elements are fully coated, with the outer lens multi-coated for additional light transmission.

But the Orion Lanthanum give the user unparalleled, panoramic views of the night sky. An ultra-wide 80º field of view and true-color optics allow the Lanthanum eyepieces to display impressive views of the cosmos. With long eye relief and fully multi-coated optics, users can enjoy a comfortable viewing experience with no eye strain, taking in the full 80º field of view with or without eyeglasses. Optics are designed using lanthanum glass elements to eliminate color-fringing and chromatic aberrations for true-color views of the cosmos.
