JMI, or Jim's Mobile Incorporated, officially opened its doors in 1990, but the seeds of this company, like so many others, began with an amateur astronomer who saw a need and decided to fill it. In 1983, Jim Burr decided to create a device that could focus a telescope without creating vibrations, and MOTOFOCUS was born. He advertised the product in the pages of Sky and Telescope magazine, not expecting much of a response. At the time, Jim owned a "complete TV shop on wheels" in Lakewood, Colorado, called Jim's Mobile Color TV Shop, and so his initial venture into telescope accessories was fed by a desire to make using his telescope more pleasurable. Jim was surprised to find, however, that a lot of people wanted to buy his MOTOFOCUS, and so began a product line of useful, easy-to-use motors and drive correctors.
Today, JMI continues to offer useful, easy to use motorized products like the MOTOFOCUS, MOTODEC, and Smart Focus, but they also offer a large selection of telescope hard cases, wheeley bars to help move telescopes mounted on tripods around without dismantling them, and large aperture Newtonian Next Generation (NGT) and New Technology (NTT) telescopes.
Jim Burr has always wanted to offer products that no one else does. "Our style is not to copy other companies, but to create unique products to solve problems. If other companies are building good products, we are not going to compete with them. We only take action when we see a need that no one is addressing."
We highly recommend JMI telescope cases and accessories to our customers, especially their hard cases for most telescope models on the market today. We are a sucker for quality and passion, and JMI has both in spades. Buy JMI telescope accessories online today!
