Twenty years ago, telescopes designs like the Ritchey-Chretien, which are meant for astrophotography and not for visual use, were purchased by professionals, universities and advanced amateur astronomers with pretty deep wallets! However, as digital imaging became more popular and the price of CCD sensors came down, more amateur astronomers entered the world of astro-imaging and of course, they were on the look-out for optical systems that would work together with their cameras to produce the best images. Before long, several companies released their version of a telescope that was optimized for imaging. The most popular designs include Celestron's EdgeHD and Meade's ACF, or Advanced Coma-Free telescopes.

True Ritchey-Chretien telescopes, also known as RC telescopes, have a folded optical design like a Schmidt- or Maksutov-Cassegrain but do not have a corrector plate. The optics consist of a primary and secondary hyperbolic mirror to eliminate coma and spherical aberrations. Removing these aberrations allows astronomers to accurately take scientific measurements regarding a star's location. Other optical issues inherrent in the Ritchey-Chretien design, such as astigmatism and field curvature can be greatly reduced with the addition of a field flattener, allowing serious amateur astronomers to image with larger sensors and still have great star images across the field of view.

Variations on this design include the Celestron EdgeHD, a telescope with an optimized aplanatic flat-field Schmidt-Cassegrain optical system, and the Meade ACF, or Advanced Coma-Free telescope. Both telescope manufacturers advertise a much flattener field than that of a standard Schmidt-Cassegrain; a real boon to amateur astronomers who want to produce beautiful images of celestial objects. A flattened field yields star images that have a pleasingly round shape all the way to the edge of the field of view, whether you are using a large imaging sensor or are looking through a super wide angle eyepiece.
