Orion SkyQuest XX12g GoTo Truss Tube Dobsonian Highlights

  • The Orion SkyQuest XX12g represents a stylish mix of three key attributes: powerful optical capabilities, parts that quickly break down for convenient portability, and up-to-date motorized GoTo and tracking technology.
  • Large 12" aperture optics attract a substantial quantity of light for superior views of galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters as well as objects in our solar system such as the Moon and planets.
  • Orion designed the SkyQuest XX12g to be easily collapsible with a GoTo Dobsonian base and eight pole truss optical tube that both break down into convenient parts that will fit in nearly all cars for traveling to remote star party locations.
  • Closed-loop electronics absolve inadvertent bumps, nudges, and even manual repositioning without compromising GoTo system alignment while heavy-duty clutches provide independent motion adjustment to your desired degree of resistance in both axes.
  • Package includes a 28 mm 2" DeepView eyepiece, 12.5 mm illuminated 1.25" Plossl eyepiece, eyepiece rack, EZ Finder II with bracket, collimation cap, Starry Night software, 2" extension tube, hand controller, 2" extension tube, cooling fan, dust cover, 12V DC cable, and more!

Orion's cutting-edge 12" Dobsonian is well-equipped for lengthy night sky exploration sessions. Given its fully motorized GoTo and tracking drives that allow for automatic pointing to any of the 42,000+ night sky objects stored in the hand controller's database, the Orion SkyQuest XX12g GoTo Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope is a model that may cause you to lose some sleep because you'll be having so much fun you'll be reluctant to stop.

The Orion SkyQuest XX12g GoTo Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope was designed for portability above all else. The truss tube can be split into a small front tube component that includes the secondary mirror and focuser, a rear tube component with the primary mirror cell, and the four sets of truss-poles. With a collapsible base that easily breaks down into four individual parts for convenient transport, Orion has improved the portability of the XX12g compared with the XX12i IntelliScope model. The disconnected component parts of the XX12g optical tube and base don't take up an inordinate amount of space in your home, and can be moved to your preferred dark-sky observing site via any standard-sized vehicle.

The XX12g optical tube uses a solid 8-pole truss design that all but eradicates flexure seen in six and three pole collapsible optical tube designs. The stability of the XX12g when assembled is given a boost by its 1" thick composite wood base panels that are laminated with water-resistant black melamine. GoTo and tracking motors have been pre-installed on the base panels for quick and easy set-up. As soon as the tube and base have been put together, they attach to each other via a dovetail trunnion and lock securely in place using a single captive hand knob.

Choose from more than 42,000 celestial objects available through the hand controller's easy-to-use menus and the XX12g GoTo system will automatically slew the telescope in its direction following a simple alignment procedure. Altitude and azimuth motors instantly track the desired object's motion so that it maintains its place in the eyepiece field of view for protracted visual study. Those who have the experience of spending an evening manually tracking objects with a Dobsonian are well aware that this is a serious upgrade. The XX12g features closed-loop electronics that forgive bumps and nudges, enabling the optical tube to be repositioned, or slewed, without sacrificing any GoTo system alignment. Upgraded heavy-duty clutches allow for motion to be adjusted separately in both axes to your desired level of resistance.

Using 12" (305 mm) of light gathering aperture along with a fast f/4.9 focal ratio, the Orion SkyQuest XX12g GoTo Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope is able to provide sharp, clear, bright night sky views through a 1.25" or 2" eyepiece positioned in its 2" dual-speed Crayford focuser with 1.25" adapter. The 12" diffraction-limited parabolic primary mirror is made from low thermal expansion glass for fast ambient temperature adaptation and maximum visual performance. Incorporated cooling accelerator fan helps to accelerate primary mirror temperature adaptation (requires supplemental 8 D-cell batteries, or alternative 12V power source, not included in this package). The primary mirror is equipped with augmented reflectivity aluminum coatings which supply 94% reflectivity and a protective quartz overcoat to help take advantage of every last photon gathered.
