More About the Astronomik OIII 12 nm CCD Filter

The Astronomik OIII CCD filter is a narrow-band emission-line filter for CCD photography. The filter lets the light of double ionized Oxygen of emission nebulae pass and blocks nearly the whole remainder of the spectrum where the CCD is sensitive. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 12 nm is ideal for common CCD cameras and allows the use of very fast optics. The optimal aperture ratio for the use of the filter is 1:3 to 1:15. Using this filter guarantees 90% transmission or more at OIII (501 nm). This filter is made to Astronomik's exacting standards. While transmission ratings may vary between each filter, you are guaranteed a transmission rating greater than 90%, with a typical transmission rating of around 95% for the 12 nm OIII. The specific T-Max will be listed on the filter case. You can rest easy knowing that every unit is thoroughly tested and guaranteed to meet Astronomik's stellar benchmark of performance! A further note, which led to selecting the half width (FWHM), is the dark current of common CCD imagers. Exposures with a CCD cooled to -15°C are limited by the dark current of the CCD, even in large cities with a bright background. Another advantage of the 12 nm filter is the better availability of guiding stars for cameras with built-in-autoguider.

Emphasizing the contrast between objects in the OIII emission line and the skyglow background, the Astronomik OIII CCD Filter offers complete suppression of emission lines from spurious light sources like mercury (Hg), sodium (Na), and airglow. Loss of transmission and chromatic distortions, which can be a problem with filters available from other manufacturers, are only an issue with Astronomik filters when excessively bright aperture ratios of 1:2 or more are in play. Since this filter has a built-in IR-blocker up to 1150 nm, an extra IR-blocker is not required.

When employing the Astronomik OIII 12 nm CCD Filter in conjunction with an H-Alpha or SII CCD filter, even imaging in an environment with very heavy light pollution will not prevent you from obtaining three-color images of emission line gas nebulae. To accomplish this, you need to capture an image in three different wavelengths, choose each as a color-channel in Photoshop and paste them together as one individual color image. This filter is diffraction limited and will not lower the optical efficiency of your telescope! Astronomik filters arrive with a long-lasting plastic storage box of supreme quality.

Astronomik EOS R APS-C Clip Filter System

Astronomik EOS R APS-C clip filters are suitable for use with APS-C Canon EOS camera models. Facilitates imaging from both urban and rural areas, and does not require any modifications to the camera housing for use. Once the filter has been slid into place and is level, you can then reinstall the camera lens and you'll be ready to start imaging.

Without any tools and using only a finger, this filter can be easily installed. Removal does require the aid of an included small hook, but only initially. As soon as the filter is out far enough for you to grip with your fingers, you can go ahead and take it out the rest of the way and place it back in the case.
