Solar Filters

White light filters, available with either solar film or glass, are a special type of neutral density filter ideal for newer Sun observers. These filters show the entire visible wavelength spectrum but transmit only 0.001% of the Sun’s light. Many of these filters will show a white-looking Sun, however, there are white light filters that are slightly tinted to show a more orange color, as we normally see the Sun. If you're wondering how to choose the correct solar filter for your telescope, don't fret, we have you covered! Check out the article our team created specifically to help you measure the outside diameter of your telescope so you can feel confident in picking the RIGHT filter for your needs! Additionally, this article has a handy Solar Filter Calculator which allows you to choose from a list of already measured telescopes by our gear experts, saving you the trouble and worry of measuring your own telescope: How To Choose A Solar Filter: Measuring Your Telescope & Solar Filter Calculator

Hydrogen-Alpha filters, on the other hand, transmit just the H-Alpha wavelength and are considered a narrowband filter. These show detailed features of the Sun, such as solar flares and sunspots, in a reddish hue. This makes H-Alpha filters a worthy investment for many seasoned Sun observers. Most observers recommend using an H-Alpha filter with a short refractor, either a 3” or 4” will do. As always, make sure your filter is designed for viewing or photographing the Sun!

In addition to filters, you can also pick up eyepieces specially designed for viewing the sun. We also carry a large selection of solar telescopes and accessories in addition to filters.

There are certain precautions you must take in order to safely view the Sun. Before viewing, always inspect your solar filters and do not use them if there is any sign of scratches or damage. Older solar viewing filters recommend discarding the product after 3 years, as the filter gradually loses its effectiveness. However, this is not the case for many modern Sun-viewing filters. Always consult an expert to confirm if you can safely use your older solar filters. Rest assured, your new solar filter from High Point Scientific will protect your eyes for an optimal viewing experience.
