Ideal for imaging the Moon and planets, particularly Mars, with 6" or larger telescopes, an Astronomik ProPlanet IR 742 filter will only allow the transmittance of infrared light with wavelengths of more than 742 nm to pass to your camera’s sensor. In this part of the spectrum, seeing effects are substantially lower than in the visible spectrum of the human eye. This enables considerably sharper images than can be typically obtained from your telescope and location.

Another benefit of the ProPlanet IR 742 is the darker sky background seen when imaging just before dawn, enabling lunar and planetary photography even at daybreak. By simultaneously allowing only light from wavelengths longer than 742 nm to pass while completely suppressing the visible area of the spectrum, the Astronomik ProPlanet IR 742 Filter greatly enhances images of the Moon and planets.
Images are steadier compared to images captured in visible light, with close to the same necessary exposure times. Additionally, the ProPlanet IR 742 is parfocal with all other filters made by Astronomik and although your images will lack color when using these filters with a color camera, a ProPlanet IR 742 filter will allow the user to reveal interesting details found deeper within the planetary atmospheres of the outer planets than those accessible with a color image. When capturing data using this filter with a monochrome camera, you can substitute the L filter with a ProPlanet IR 742, and then introduce your RGB color channels to reveal even more spectacular and sharper details!
