As a member of the QHY 5III series, this QHY5III585M is loaded with numerous useful upgrades. Not only can you rely on the powerful performance of the Sony IMX585 monochrome sensor, but you can also reap the benefits of the internal electronics, universal ports, and the host of included accessories. Take a look below as we dive deeper into the features of this QHY camera!
Sony IMX585 Monochrome Starvis II Sensor
This QHY5III585M V2 camera utilizes the high performance Sony Starvis II IMX585 sensor. As one of the latest generation of sensors, the photodiode portion of the pixel well is physically deeper, meaning photons of longer wavelengths are allowed to penetrate deeper into the substrate. This in turn increases near-infrared (NIR) sensitivity, making it perfect for imaging the planets! Another aspect making this camera ideal for planetary imaging is the fast frame rates of 41.5 FPS at 8 bit and 23.4 FPS at 16 bit. Compared to its color counterpart, the monochrome design of this sensor collects 4x more red and blue photons, and 2x more green photons. This furthers its ability in resolving subtle detail and structure. With a pixel size of 2.9μm x 2.9μm and a total of 8.4 megapixels, enjoy capturing stunning detail on Jupiter’s bands, Saturn’s rings, the lunar surface, and plenty more. The large full well capacity of 52Ke and 12-bit ADC provide a high dynamic range as well, ensuring your astroimages are brimming with definition. Also, the read noise of 0.77e- to 8e- and high quantum efficiency of 90% makes for a great signal-to-noise ratio.
Electronics Highlights
To help uphold the integrity of your frames and make image transfer much quicker, this QHY5III585M comes equipped with a built-in 512MB memory buffer. This inclusion is vital for the high frame rates needed for planetary imaging, lunar imaging, and guiding, as a large amount of data must be read in a short amount of time. Another key inclusion is the onboard electronic rolling shutter. By offering a much faster shutter speed than a mechanical shutter, an electronic shutter captures frames very quickly, ensuring the moments of ideal seeing are recorded for the best possible final images. This QHY5III585M is also fitted with a multi-colored LED indicator found at the back of this camera. In instances of abnormal status, this LED indicator will present different colors signifying different conditions. Under normal operation, this indicator light remains off, eliminating the worry of image degradation.
Power and Ports
The new QHY5III V2 series of cameras all utilize USB 3.2 Gen 1 type-C interfaces. The USB type-C interfaces are much more dependable than the previously used USB type-B interfaces, as they have a longer life and are more flexible. This port offers data transfer and a supply of power, meaning there is no need to add additional cables to power this camera. To ensure your images transfer with the highest speed and the best possible quality, and to provide reliable power, QHY has included a superior-grade USB-C cable within this package. This QHY camera is also fitted with an ST-4 port, making it easy to directly connect your camera to your mount.
Loads of Inclusions
Setting you up for success, QHY has included numerous accessories within this package! The added USB 3.0 type-C and ST-4 guiding cables make it easy to connect your gear in no time. As stated above, this USB-C cable is of premier quality to ensure maximum reliability. Two adapters, a 1.25” to CS mount adapter, and a CS to C mount adapter, also come with this camera as well. Within this box you will find three filters: a UV/IR-Cut front window, an IR850nm filter for NIR imaging, and an AR+AR glass that allows all wavelengths through. If you’d like to use your own 1.25” filters, easily do so with the included 1.25” threads found on the front of this camera. Also added within this package is a focus locking ring and thumb screw to aid in securing your focus in place.
