THE INDUSTRY'S BEST TELESCOPE AND ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY EXPERTS
Look, we get it. Stating that we’re the “best” can seem a bit like a catch. However, with a combined astronomy experience of over 115 years (117 to be exact), our team of telescope and astrophotography experts, a.k.a. "Gear Experts", knows astronomy and how to service our customers.
We know how to narrow down the products that best fit YOUR needs, rather than push something simply because it’s easy. Once we’ve done that, we ensure you understand WHY we’re recommending the product by teaching you the concepts behind the product and in the process, we demystify all the terminology. Leaving you with confidence knowing you are making the right decision and one that is perfect for you and your goals of viewing the night sky!
Our knowledge is only surpassed by our passion for this wonderful hobby we all love so much. We truly believe our team is a cut above the rest and we look forward working with you!
NON-COMMISSIONED PRODUCT ADVISORS
Our team of product advisors know what it’s like to buy astronomy equipment for the first time. There are so many types of telescopes and accessories that the process can be overwhelming enough without having to worry about pushy salespeople trying to make a big commission.
That’s why our unbiased, non-commissioned product advisors’ only incentive is to recommend a product that they truly believe is the right choice to help you meet your goals, and at a price point that also meets your budget. There’s never any pressure to buy, and you can rest assured that your recommendation is personalized for you rather than motivated by financial gain. We look forward to helping you start your astronomy journey!
About the Sky-Watcher Skymax 180 mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope
Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes are all about sharp, contrasty images, and the flexibility to use them as a telescope for astronomy, a spotting scope for terrestrial use, a lens for photography…or all three! The Sky-Watcher 180 mm Maksutov-Cassegrain uses a large 7.1” lens system to do the job of gathering light so you can see faint objects millions of light years away. The classic long focal length of f/15 will give you inky dark background skies so that celestial targets stand out beautifully.
The Skywatcher 180 mm Skymax comes with a nice selection of accessories, including a 2” 90-degree star diagonal, a 28 mm 2” LET eyepiece, an 8 x 50 straight-through finder for the location and centering of objects, and a Vixen-style dovetail plate, which allows you to mount your telescope on an alt-azimuth or equatorial mount that can handle at least 17 pounds.
Why a Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope?
Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes are super popular, and for good reason! First of all, they are very portable for the size of their optics. With a relatively short, lightweight optical tube, the 7.1” Maksutov-Cassegrain is way more portable than a similar-sized refractor or Newtonian.
But let’s face it, portability isn’t everything! You still need enough light-gathering to see the objects you wish to look at, whether that object is Saturn, the Orion Nebula, a boat on the horizon at dusk, or a deer resting in the shade of an oak tree. 180 mm (over 7”) of aperture is large enough to enjoy everything from the Moon to faint deep sky objects across the universe, and it will blow you away for terrestrial applications.
Another consideration when choosing a telescope or spotting scope is how sharp the optics are. This is where the Sky-Watcher Skymax really shines! A Mak-Cass uses both mirrors and lenses to gather and focus light, and this design is famous for sharp, high-contrast “refractor-like” images.
You might ask why you wouldn’t just buy an 8” Schmidt-Cassegrain instead? It is true that they are portable for their optical size, and cost about the same. Many people love their SCT’s and are perfectly happy with them, but the 180 mm SW Maksutov offers one thing a classic SCT does not….those high contrast, velvety black background skies. It’s the focal length that does it. The Sky-Watcher S11530 Mak has a 2700 mm focal length and an f/ratio of 15. Most SCT’s have an f/ratio of 10. If wide field imaging is not your passion and you prefer a refractor-like view, then you should seriously consider the Sky-Watcher 180 mm Skymax!

Astrozap Celestron 8 SCT/CPC Flexi-Shield Flexible...
Dew can quickly ruin a night of imaging, but there are ways to keep it at bay on all but the wettest of nights. Wrap this flexible dew shield snuggly around the end of your Mak-Cass tube assembly to delay the formation of dew on your telescope's corrector plate. A dew shield also prevents stray light from bouncing off your optics and reducing contrast.

Apertura 2x ED Barlow Lens - 2"
A 2X Barlow is one of the most popular telescope accessories available because it doubles the magnification of any eyepiece! Since this is a 2” 2X Barlow with a 1.25” adapter, it will work great with both 1.25” and 2” eyepieces. The included 28 mm eyepiece with this telescope has a power of 96X on its own (192X with the Barlow), and if you add a few eyepieces as well, your magnification choices will multiply quickly!

Celestron Ultima Edge 18mm 1.25" Eyepiece
The Celestron 18 mm Edge eyepiece will produce 150X magnification when used in the Skywatcher 180 Mak. If you also pick up a 2X Barlow, you’d be able to double the magnification of the 18 mm to 300X, which is about max for this scope on nights of good seeing.

William Optics 40 mm Super Wide Angle 2" Eyepiece
We are offering this 40 mm SWA eyepiece to allow your telescope to gather more light from faint deep-sky objects. The 40 mm produces 68X when used with the Skymax 180, but if you also pick up a 2X Barlow lens, it will double the magnification of the 40 mm eyepiece to 136X. The 2X Barlow could then be used with any other eyepiece you acquire!

Celestron Sky Maps and Planisphere
This water resistant sky map does double duty! On the front is a northern hemisphere planisphere that rotates so you can figure out what constellations are up for a specific date and time. Inside are seasonal star maps that display where bright stars and celestial objects are located, with info broken down by constellation. Recommended for anyone who wants to know what's up in the sky at any given time, this guide will serve you well for many years to come!

Apertura Astro Vision Red LED Flashlight
A red flashlight keeps your eyes dark-adapted for the best views! Use it to read star charts, look for accessories, or get around in the dark. A must for any amateur astronomer!

Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro GoTo Equatorial Mount
If you don't already have a good equatorial mount for this Skymax 180 OTA, why not take a look at the HEQ5, a great medium weight computerized mount from Sky-Watcher? The Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro has a 30 lb. weight capacity, the tried and true SynScan GoTo System, a built in polar scope, auto guide capability, and more. This model comes with a sturdy tripod.
