A High Performance, Professional Camera for Astrophotography
Let's Dig into the Data!
What sets one astrophotography camera apart from another? How is performance measured? Camera and sensor manufacturers provide certain interconnected specifications that give insight into the performance of a camera. These measurements include quantum efficiency, read noise, full well depth, gain, dark current, and dynamic range. While the graphs provided by the manufacturer may be confusing or intimidating, don't fret! Our team has put together a breakdown of these complicated topics to help you make sense of them. Take a look at the article here: Understanding ZWO Camera Charts and Graphs, and feel more confident making the right choice for your astrophotography needs!
Sony IMX664 CMOS Sensor
Equipped with Sony STARVIS 2 technology, the ASI664MC produces exceptional image quality through its back illuminated sensor design. The increased sensitivity to near infrared (NIR) offers heightened performance in low light for an enhanced astrophotography experience. This 4.15MP Sony IMX664 sensor includes a small pixel size of 2.9um, a large full well capacity of 36.5Ke, and 12bit ADC for highly detailed images packed with dynamic range. The low readout noise of 0.46e and high peak QE of 91% provides an excellent signal to noise ratio within the frames captured.
Electronic Highlights
Typical CMOS sensors feature circuitry that allows light from within the camera itself to leak into the frames captured. This light is referred to as amp glow, and requires calibration frames to eliminate the effects of it. Adopting no-glow circuitry, the ASI664MC removes this issue all together for cleaner images! Also integrated into this camera is a DDR3 memory buffer. This extra 256MB of internal memory significantly reduces buffer speeds during image transfer, allowing for a high speed imaging in a smooth, seamless manner.
USB 3.0 and ST4 Guide Port
During high speed imaging, it’s important to have a reliable system in place to transfer your data safely and securely. The onboard USB3.0 comes furnished with a large bandwidth, fully supporting the high frame rate of 95MP at full, 4.15MP. Needing an upgraded guide camera? Connect the ASI664MC directly to your mount through the ST4 port to assist in tracking accuracy!
