Apertura AD16 Truss Dobsonian 16" Telescope
"You Are Now Entering the Territory of Some Serious Deep Sky Observing"

Set your star gazing sights high with the Apertura AD16 Truss Dobsonian 16" Telescope! With an astronomically large aperture, high quality construction, and all the accessories you need to get started, the largest entry in the iconic Apertura AD Dobsonian series rockets your visual astronomy experience to immense heights. If incredible illumination, maximum resolution, and more reach is your goal then this tremendous telescope is the right choice for you!

The AD16 Truss Dobsonian 16" Telescope pushes Apertura's Dobs further than ever before for those seeking more. With a monumental mirror providing an astounding 4x more light gathering ability of an 8" Dobsonian this scope gives you access to more resolution to bring out even more detail on cosmic sights, extra illumination from your eyepiece compared to smaller scopes, and more magnification to put celestial bodies even more front and center. What this means for you—not only can you resolve the bands of Jupiter and rings of Saturn with more precision, but also peer through the veil at fainter objects like low magnitude nebulae and begin to experience their ethereal wonder with just your eyepiece! This titan of a scope features a truss design, which creates a rigid OTA in use but can also be disassembled for a more manageable footprint when you're looking to store or move the telescope. This is all packaged with an excellent set of eyepieces, tools, and supporting accessories that allow you to dive into the sea of stars, planets, and deep sky objects above on day one!

What Does Our Team Think?

  • "The first thing about the Apertura AD16 that I noticed was the truss tube design. Fully assembled, this scope just looks awesome. The truss tubes are carbon fiber built and are supremely sturdy. This helped keep collimation spot on throughout the night. The 16” mirror, despite its size, didn't hinder the ability to move this scope around. In fact, this has been the smoothest and easiest to balance Dobsonian that I have used to date. If you are curious about the upper limits of amateur visual astronomy, the Apertura AD16 is going to blow you away. With 4 times the light gathering power of the AD8, you will be impressed under dark skies by the color in the Orion Nebula, the spiral arms of Messier 51, and the mind boggling details on the lunar surface. As I stated in our Full review video, with this scope, "you are entering the territory of some serious deep sky observing."

A Vast Aperture, Solid Construction, and a Stellar Set of Accessories

If you're looking for powerful performance, then the Apertura AD16 Truss Dobsonian 16" Telescope delivers; with an incredible light bucket build that will push your observations to new heights from day one!

Premium Optics and Truss Telescope Construction
The Apertura AD16 Truss Dobsonian 16" Telescope features diffraction limited optics, made in Taiwan, that deliver big performance from this big telescope! The massive 16" borosilicate primary and 3.5" secondary mirrors are finished with a 96% enhanced aluminum coating with a protective overcoat to push the performance and longevity of these impressive diffraction limited optics. Aligning this large set of optics isn't a big task—with the upgraded secondary spider vanes, easy to use manual adjustment knobs on the primary cell, Philips head screws on the secondary, and a straightforward laser collimation tool included in the box. The AD16 features a truss tube design, which blends sturdy steel mirror cages with a light but incredibly robust set of carbon fiber rods which can be removed to help make transport or storage require less space. Improving upon the common Crayford, the AD16 includes a 2" dual speed 10:1 linear bearing focuser. This offers more points of contact which yields superb support for larger 2" eyepieces and a smoother and more precise focusing experience compared to other focusers found on Dobsonians.

Breathtaking Performance
Dobsonians are often regarded as one of the best designs for those looking to maximize the telescope size to dollar value, and the Apertura AD16 Truss Dobsonian 16" Telescope follows this tradition by feeding your aperture obsession at an excellent value. This incredible f/4.5 1800 mm focal length light bucket gives you a massive 4x increase in light gathering power compared to an 8" Dobsonian, giving you more resolving power with impressive 0.29" and 0.35" Dawe's and Rayleigh limits and a higher limiting magnitude of 15.71! These impressive specs mean the AD16 will bring a bright image to your eyepiece, bring out more faint features in deep sky objects and pull previously diffuse celestial bodies closer to the forefront. The impressive aperture also brings more resolution to your observations which will render stellar sights in even more awe-inspiring detail.

Intuitive Alt-Az Operation
Charting your journey across the stars is a fluid experience with the rocker box base! Altitude adjustability and tensioning is provided by two aluminum side bearings which allow this scope to glide up and down with ease. These bearings feature the AD series balance adjustability, allowing you to dial in your AD16 balance for your unique setup. Adjusting the Apertura AD16's azimuth heading and tensioning is handled by the 360° spinning base, which rides on needle bearings for smooth movements. Together these systems make moving this 16" 70 lb. telescope by hand an effortless and intuitive affair!

Tons of Accessories Included
Elevating this scope's value-for-aperture even further is a suite of extras included in the box! Helping direct this telescope titan to your target is an 8x50 mm right angle finder scope, mounted next to the focuser for observational convenience. With your object of choice in the crosshairs, the included 30 mm 2" SuperView 68° Eyepiece brings this celestial body into view in wide and spectacular detail. If more magnification is what you're after, install the 2" to 1.25" adapter and drop in the 25 mm 1.25" 52° Plossl Eyepiece to bring you a step closer—perfect for pairing with the included 1.25" Moon Filter and bringing more contrast to your lunar explorations. These eyepieces provide an excellent compliment to your telescope out of the box, with Apertura offering their Super Wide Angle Eyepiece line (sold separately) as way to expand your magnification options and immerse yourself further in the sea of stars. Ensuring you can reach focus with all your eyepieces, the AD16 also includes a 35 mm 2" extension tube. Diving into these observations ASAP is made easy with a cooling fan, which when powered from the AA battery pack (batteries not included) will help your optics acclimate faster, and a 1.25" laser collimator that allows you to dial your mirror alignment ahead of time or as needed in the field. Storing this collimation tool and your eyepiece tool kit for quick access can be done with the four eyepiece holder; which is side mounted and gives you easy access to three 1.25" and one 2" eyepieces or accessories!
