Helical focusers allow for a sleek and streamlined telescope design compared to some other focuser designs, however connecting electronic focusers to them usually is anything but. Askar has changed this reality for their excellent SQA55 refractor with this auto-focus upgrade kit! While installing a bracket-style electronic focuser to this refractor is possible, it requires a properly sized belt and synchronous pulley, can suffer from a bit of backlash, could leave portions of the bracket in the way of your gear, and just generally does not match the otherwise premium and sleek look of the scope. The AF Kit addresses all of these concerns with an upgraded connection system that can adapt to most popular bracket-style electronic focuser options on the market in a sleek and compact footprint, a belt tensioner that helps eliminate backlash, and all the parts you need to adapt your electronic focuser to the SQA55!
Simple Installation
Upgrading your SQA55 scope with the Askar AF Kit for SQA55 Refractor can be done in three main steps:
- Step 1 - Set the fine focus ring to the "0" position, and the coarse focus ring to the "20m" position. Unscrew and remove the coarse focus ring's lock knob. Then place the main AF Kit bracket in the SQA55's quick release shoe, adjusting the rear set screw with the 3 mm hex key until the bracket expands and locks in place.
- Step 2 - Attach the "foot" (shorter section) of the two L-shaped brackets to the main bracket with the two M4x12 mm screws. Depending on the hole pattern of your electronic focuser the foot of the L-shaped brackets may need to face inwards or outwards. Now attach the electronic focuser to the longer upright sections of the L-shaped brackets, using either the included two M4x10 mm or M3x10 mm screws (check your electronic focuser manual if you're unsure of which to use).
- Step 3 - Install the included coupler (synchronous pulley) on the electronic focuser shaft. Loop the smallest belt that will comfortably fit over the pulley and coarse focus ring, ensuring this is looped under the tensioner wheel. Tighten the tensioner screw on the main bracket until snug. When installed correctly, tension wheel will pull the belt inwards.
