One Camera for All: The ASI585MM Pro!

Looking for a camera suitable for both deep space imaging and planetary photography? This highly sensitive, finely crafted ASI585MM Pro astronomy camera from ZWO is the perfect choice! Fitted with qualities that help you capture stunning detail on the planets while also housing useful features for deep space imaging, you can enjoy the best of both worlds. This versatile camera opens the doors to near endless imaging possibilities and beautifully crisp images, making it a must have within your astrophotography toolkit!

Equipped with both small pixels and a high frame rate, the planetary performance of this ASI585MM Pro is sure to impress. Collect stunning detail on Jupiter and its cloud bands, Saturn’s rings, as well as surface detail on Mars. For deep space imaging, the built-in TEC cooling system drastically reduces heat noise during long exposure imaging, while the high peak quantum efficiency (QE) of 91% ensures outstanding signal conversion for exceptional detail collection on faint galaxies and nebulae! Quality of life features like zero amp glow, an integrated memory buffer, and a reliable USB 3.0 interface help enhance your experience under the stars even further. These characteristics, in addition to many more, make for a camera that’s sure to take your astroimaging to the next level.

A High Performance, Professional Camera for Astrophotography

Let's Dig into the Data!

What sets one astrophotography camera apart from another? How is performance measured? Camera and sensor manufacturers provide certain interconnected specifications that give insight into the performance of a camera. These measurements include quantum efficiency, read noise, full well depth, gain, and dynamic range. While the graphs provided by the manufacturer may be confusing or intimidating, don't fret! Our team has put together a breakdown of these complicated topics to help you make sense of them. Take a look at the article here: Understanding ZWO Camera Charts and Graphs, and feel more confident making the right choice for your astrophotography needs!

Sony IMX585 Sensor
The ASI585MM Pro is assembled with the Sony IMX585 sensor and offers a resolution of 3840x2160–allowing you to capture stunning 4K images! The small 2.9 um pixel size is wonderful for collecting fine details on celestial objects, and the total of 8.29 megapixels offers impressive resolution. In the absence of a Bayer Matrix, the monochrome design of this camera utilizes every pixel well, making it much more effective at signal collection than its color counterpart, the ASI585MC Pro. This efficacy in signal conversion can be seen with the rated 91% peak QE value . Additional qualities include a low readout noise of 0.7e for crisp, clean images, and a 40Ke full well capacity for rich gradients within the captured frames. The exceptional sensitivity and low-light performance offered by this camera can be credited to the STARVIS 2 technology, a breakthrough innovation from Sony. No matter if you’re collecting data on our solar system neighbors, or exploring deep space, the ASI585MM Pro is the optimal camera for both! Please Note: This camera is equipped with an AR-only coated window, and will need a UV/IR cut filter for imaging broadband targets.

Electronic Highlights
In addition to a high performance sensor, the ASI585MM Pro is fitted with key inner workings to maximize the quality of your astrophotography. The backlit design of this Sony IMX585 means there are no wires or transistors in the way of the pixel wells, as typically seen within other CMOS cameras. This absence of obstructions enables more photons to hit the sensor and be converted into signal, boosting the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio and improving image quality. Particularly useful for long-exposure deep space imaging, cool the sensor down to -35° below ambient temperature with the onboard TEC cooling system for a significant reduction in heat noise. The resulting data will be exceptionally sharp with more detail presented. Also included is a 512MB DDR3 memory cache for smoother data transfer and less lag even at the max frame rate of 47 FPS. You can also enjoy cleaner data thanks to the absence of amp glow!

Power and Ports
On the back of this ASI585MM Pro, you’ll find a total of three USB ports: one USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports. The USB 3.0 port with a 5Gb bandwidth offers stable, reliable data transmission to your computer while the USB 2.0 hub enables connection of various accessories, such as an electronic focuser or guide camera. To get you ready for your next astrophotography session, this ASI585MM Pro comes standard with one USB 3.0 cord and two USB 2.0 cables. A 12V DC power cable is required to power your camera though is not included within this package. We highly recommend the Apertura Universal 5 Amp AC Adapter to get the job done!

Everything Needed for Proper Backfocus Spacing
Understanding the headache of trying to find the perfect backfocus, ZWO has supplied the correct spacers and adapters for the industry standard of 55mm of backfocus! Also, this ample selection of adapters available allows you to easily swap accessories in and out of your imaging train, such as the ZWO OAG or ZWO Filter Drawer. Thanks to ZWO, attaching the ASI585MM Pro to your telescope is a breeze!
