
Observatories are home to some of the biggest and most impressive telescopes in the world. As many amateur astronomers know, there are numerous ways to experience the night sky beyond looking through a telescope in your own backyard. Montana has impressive observatories that offer a wide variety of star parties, tours, and observatory programs that will expand your knowledge of astronomy and your love of the night sky, whether you are new to astronomy or have been in the hobby for years.

Blue Mountain Observatory
The Blue Mountain Observatory, built in 1970, is located on the top of Blue Mountain and is operated by the University of Montana’s Department of Physics and Astronomy faculty, staff, and students.
Telescope
The observatory is home to a 16” Boller and Chivens Cassegrain telescope on a permanent equatorial mount.
Visiting
The Blue Mountain Observatory offers Public Observing nights hosted by the UM astronomers and the Western Montana Astronomical Association members. Prior to visiting, visitors must reserve their ticket online for $10 per person for the open house, and $25 per person for the small group sessions. Start times vary, so prospective visitors should visit the webpage for updated information.
