Askar V Initial Batch Issue & Solution

Askar recently reached out to us citing an issue with their highly anticipated Askar V telescope system. This relates to how the focuser operates, where it has been found that on some V telescopes, the dual-speed focus knob may ‘slip’ when a heavy load is placed on the drawtube.

Askar has let us know that they have already identified the source of the issue, and they’ve determined that this is limited to a small number of first-production Askar V telescopes. They have created an easy end-user fix for customers to follow should they experience the slipping issue, which we show further down below this article. Accordingly, they are not pursuing any recall or manufacturer adjustment programs at this time and the telescopes are not defective given the minimal adjustment needed and end-user adjustability.

This issue may be present on a small number of first-batch Askar V telescopes. As this issue is only evident with use, there is no way to verify whether a scope does or does not have this issue without using it in the field. At which point the scope is no longer factory sealed or new.

As a commitment to our customers, High Point Scientific only delivers factory sealed units to ensure the utmost confidence in receiving a new unit and not a refurbished or used unit. Given this, there is no way for us to guarantee that your scope will need this minor adjustment, while also providing the factory new item you paid for.

Should you encounter this issue, you can follow the video below on how to adjust/eliminate this issue using standard tools, which are listed below for reference. If you do not have those tools please reach out to us and we can provide them for you at no additional cost, again as a commitment to our customers and the community.

Tools needed for adjustment:

  • 2mm hex key
  • T6 Torx screwdriver
